Teamwork - The Secret to Our Success

Canine Helpers’ success goes far beyond our committed staff and devoted
canines. Without the financial support from all of our wonderful donors, we
could not exist or accomplish what we do. I know that may seem like an obvious
statement, but we want to make sure you realize just how important
each and every one of you are to us. We realize times are hard for most
everyone right now, due in part to the economy, budget problems in county
government, and so on. Unfortunately, this affects many non-profit
organizations, such as ours, who depend on the public for support.
Knowing this, we’d like to thank you more than ever for sticking
by our side and offering your continued support!
Our recent Summer Open House had to be our best ever! (Did you notice how
we timed it perfectly to miss this ongoing wave of heat and humidity?) Everyone
who came, including us, had a great time. It is always so nice to see everyone
in person, giving us the chance to know the faces as well as the names of so
many of our dedicated friends.
We had loads of delicious food, activities to keep even the
littlest ones happy, homemade baked goods, informative demos, raffle prizes
galore, creative crafts, and plenty of laughter and visiting. Buster Bison even
paid us an entertaining visit! And, as always, our members, donors and
volunteers gave 100% before, during and after to make this a successful event.
We are trying to come up with new ideas to raise the money needed to help
all of our deserving applicants. Our springtime “Just Chocolate” event was
definitely in VERY good taste!! I think half of WNY had a sugar high that
night! Everybody who attended, as well as those who baked or donated chocolate
goodies and raffle prizes, made it a delicious success. We are now looking
forward to our first Octoberfest &
December’s Christmas Open House. How fast time flies…
We know there are many, many more caring individuals and animal lovers out
there who have not yet heard about Canine Helpers. If this sounds like anyone
you know, would you please pass the word on, share your newsletter,
or call our office and we will be happy to mail one out to them. Thank you
again for your awesome dedication to Canine Helpers and to our Assistance Dog
Teams. We never want to leave a single deserving applicant out. Remember…
Help is only four feet away!
Bank of Akron
Lends Generous Support!
The Bank of Akron has taken on a big challenge
to raise money to sponsor an Assistance Dog. They are a hometown bank and
certainly are going the extra mile to help out in their community. Thank you,
Bank of Akron, and all your generous customers for helping Canine Helpers
and a deserving client with a disability. Your gift helps, not only now, but
for the next ten or more years for the lucky Assistance Dog Team.
Our Many Thanks and
Good Luck!
A Sweet Success
Thank you to everyone that attended “JUST CHOCOATE” on April 30th. It turned out to be a spectacular evening! We had wall to wall Chocolate. The most popular item was the chocolate fountain! Wow, dipping fresh strawberries and fresh pineapple into melted chocolate was the best! Topping off the evening was the Maryvale Jazz Ensemble under the direction of David Cohen. They brought the house down with the best jazz we have heard! The students impressed the crowd with their talent and their manners. Outstanding ladies and gentlemen! Thank you so much! The basket raffle closed the evening with a total of 65 baskets. Many went home with chocolate in their tummy, a gift basket in their arms and a song in their heart! Can’t beat a Saturday night like that! A good time was had by all with all proceeds going directly to the training and care of these wonderful dogs who enrich the lives of their owners 24-7! Thank you to all the businesses that donated to our chocolate fundraiser. You helped make it a Sweet Success! This was the first event of “Canine Helpers on the road again”. Watch for our next event… it may be in your part of town!
Many Thanks Too

Featured Pet: Lakota
Semi-Retired Gentleman
looking for a loving family
to share his life with…
Lakota is a
nine year old black Labrador Retriever. He has been a demo dog, PR
representative, fund raiser, and Therapy Dog for Canine Helpers all his life.
He is a gentle goofy dog whose favorite pastime is to see how many toys and
tennis balls he can fit in his mouth at one time. So far, five is the most! He
is very lovable and will turn himself inside out to please you. Lakota
wasn’t used as an Assistance Dog because he had weak tendons in his hind legs
and his long-term prognosis was uncertain. Thanks to Dr. Cindy Lankinau’s
periodic treatments, he has remained strong.
A couple years ago Lakota was thrown inside a car when it
swerved to avoid hitting a goose in the road. Unfortunately, the swerve threw
Lakota’s back out in a couple places. He now requires occasional
chiropractic adjustments from Dr. Cindy to keep his back in line and to remain
pain free. Lakota still loves to do his demo work for Canine Helpers, but he
really deserves a family 24/7. Although he gets plenty of love and special care
at Canine Helpers, it’s not the same as having a full-time family of his own.
We are looking for a loving person or family who would allow us to borrow Lakota
on occasion for demo work. Lakota is looking for a home to call his very own
where he will receive unlimited attention and love, as well as plenty of
playtime and exercise.
Leslie Little and
“Tanner”
Service Dog
German Shepherd/Yellow Lab Mix
Williamsburg, Virginia
Hi. My name is Leslie
Little. I live in Virginia. My disability is Dejerine Sottas, a severe and
progressive form of Muscular Dystrophy. I applied for and was matched with
Tanner, a mixed German Shepherd – Yellow Lab guy, to be my muscle power, arms
and legs. I have an older Service Dog that is closing in on thirteen years and
I wanted to be able to allow him to ease into retirement, and Tanner is a great
match for us both. Tanner is learning how to work with my busy
work schedule, volunteer work, and gardening when I am home. He opens and shuts
the fridge, opens kitchen drawers and gives me towels to use, is learning to get
vegetable cans stacked on my pantry shelves, knows the name of my
asthma medicine, orthesis shoes, elbow bracing, and hand bracing unit for my
pen. My older Service Dog and I have lived in the South for a long time and
have a slower heeling pace, to which Tanner has adjusted his speed when all
three of us go out together. But of course being a northern guy, when alone
with me, his pace is long strides and quick! The Shepherd in him is already
devoted to me, my older Service Dog, and my four cats. The Lab in him
thoroughly enjoys playtime. We do need to work on putting back the toys, but
that will come with time and age!
I am thankful that Bev and Rich were able to place Tanner with me. My
first love in dogs has always been Shepherds and Tanner so much reminds me of an
old white Shepherd mix I had many years ago. Tanner will mature into a fine
Service Dog for me. His pulling of me in the wheelchair amazes people, and
without any direction or command he veers out of the path of congestion and
steers me into clearer aisles. I am impressed with the intuitiveness that he is
showing so early on. We have only been together (alone without Rich) since June
22nd. Since my family is long gone, it is a great benefit to me
to be able to have the assistance of a working dog. Since both Tanner my new
boy, and Buck my old guy are with me, they make me feel like I can continue to
make great strides in the work I do, and to also be able to continue to live
independently. Thanks to everyone for your faith and your hard work and
generous donations for me to be able to get my new baby boy, Tanner, aka,
“Sweet Pea”.
Pet Update
Thank you to all who responded to our search for pet homes. We had a great response. As of July, the lucky pooches who now have their own loving homes are Chico, Mindy, Pepper, Tangy and Jazzmyn. We appreciate you opening your hearts and homes to these new canine family members. I am still conducting interviews and matching candidates, which is an in-depth, time consuming process. If you haven’t heard from us recently and are still interested in adopting, please feel free to call and update your application. Thanks again for your for your patience
